From the Greenway on your doorstep to day trips across the South East, here's where to go and what you'll find when you get there.
Waterford Greenway & Suir Valley Railway
The Waterford Greenway runs straight through Kilmeadan, just minutes from Kilmacthomas, giving you 46km of traffic free walking and cycling between Waterford City and Dungarvan. While you're there, hop aboard the Waterford Suir Valley Railway for a scenic narrow gauge train ride beside the River Suir. Walking and cycling the Greenway is free, while the railway ride is a paid ticket.
Curraghmore Estate, Portlaw
Home to the Marquis of Waterford, Curraghmore is one of Ireland's oldest and largest private estates, with 2,500 acres of parkland, ancient woodland, and a working farmyard. House and garden tours run on select days from May to September.
Tramore Beach and Dunes
Tramore's blue flag beach stretches for 5km along Waterford's coast, backed by dunes and a lively promenade. It's a great spot for a walk, a swim, or a first go at surfing, with cafes and an amusement park nearby for the kids.
Dunmore East
This picturesque fishing village is known for its thatched cottages, working harbour, and cliff walks looking out over Waterford Harbour. Stop for fresh seafood by the pier or spend an afternoon exploring the coves nearby.
Hook Head Lighthouse, Wexford
One of the oldest operating lighthouses in the world, Hook Lighthouse has stood guard over Waterford Harbour for 800 years. Climb the 115 steps to the top for panoramic views, or explore the visitor centre and cafe at the base. The grounds and visitor centre are free to explore, with a paid ticket only needed for the guided tower tour.
Copper Coast, Bunmahon and Stradbally
The Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark stretches 25km along Waterford's coastline, its cliffs shaped by 19th century copper mining. Stop at the visitor centre in Bunmahon for the mining heritage exhibition, then follow the coast road to the beaches around Stradbally.
Mahon Falls, Comeraghs
Tucked into the Comeragh Mountains, Mahon Falls is an 80 metre waterfall reached by an easy walk along the valley floor from the car park. It's a favourite for a scenic stroll or, for the more adventurous, a starting point for longer hikes into the Comeraghs.
Kilkenny Castle Park
Fifty acres of parkland surround historic Kilkenny Castle, with a formal rose garden, woodland walks, and a lake to explore. The parklands are free to visit and open daily, making it an easy addition to a day trip into Kilkenny city.
Castlecomer Discovery Park
Set across 80 acres of woodland and lakes, Castlecomer Discovery Park has something for every age, from Ireland's longest zip line and a high ropes course to gentle woodland walks and a coal mining heritage exhibition. The woodland walks and parkland are free to enter, while the zip line, high ropes, and mining exhibition are paid extras.
Curracloe Beach and Raven Point, Wexford
Made famous as a filming location for Saving Private Ryan, Curracloe's vast sandy beach runs for kilometres alongside the Raven Point nature reserve. Look out for red squirrels and grey seals on a walk through the pine woods before hitting the sand.
