Wet day or sunny day, County Waterford has plenty to keep kids entertained. Here are 10 of our favourite family days out, all within easy reach of Kilmacthomas.
1. Activate Waterford
Paid
Three floors of soft play, rock climbing and bouldering walls, bowling, laser tag, and a mini golf course, all under one roof in Waterford City. A reliable choice whatever the weather is doing outside.
2. Pirates Adventure, Tramore
Paid
An indoor pirate-themed centre with 12 holes of mini golf (including a glow in the dark section), ten pin bowling, and a mini go-kart track. Great for a rainy afternoon in Tramore.
3. Splashworld, Tramore
Paid
Waterford’s family waterpark, with slides, a wave pool, and swim lessons for all ages. Open year round, so it’s a solid backup plan if the beach across the road isn’t cooperating.
4. Ardmore Open Farm & Mini Zoo
Paid
A 16 acre farm with over 250 animals, including rare breeds and a few more exotic residents, plus indoor soft play and a cafe. Easily a half day out on its own.
5. Busy Barn Mini Farm, Dunmore East
Paid
A small, family-run petting farm just outside Dunmore East, with an outdoor play area, farmyard animals, and an indoor soft play and party space for when the weather turns.
6. Fenor Bog Walk and Play Park
Free
A gentle 500m boardwalk through a rare wetland habitat, great for spotting dragonflies and wildlife, followed by one of Waterford’s best playgrounds right across the road.
7. People’s Park, Waterford City
Free
Waterford’s largest public park, with two playgrounds, wide open lawns for a run around, and a Victorian bandstand. A good stop if you’re already in town for the day.
8. Waterford Suir Valley Railway

A short, scenic ride on a heritage narrow gauge train from Kilmeadan station along the River Suir. A gentle outing that works well for younger kids who might not manage a full walk or cycle.
9. Waterford Greenway
Free
46km of flat, traffic-free cycling and walking between Waterford City and Dungarvan, with bike hire available at several points. Pick a short stretch near Kilmeadan for younger legs.
10. Tramore Beach and Amusement Park
Free & Paid
A 5km blue flag beach for sandcastles and paddling, with the seasonal amusement park right behind it for funfair rides when they’ve had enough of the sand. The beach is free, though you’ll pay per ride at the amusement park.
